Mexicarte Folkart gallery in AkumalIf you have not already noticed… MEXICO LOVES COLORS! There is an amazing shop in Akumal called “Mexicarte”. It is the pink shop near the entrance arch in Akumal. They offer a selective collection of art, jewelry and handcrafts made in Mexico. They have chosen each artist because they are the best in their trade. These are people who are true to their roots and do not have access to mass marketing.

Skulls from Mexicarte folk art gallery in akumalThe owners of this shop work closely with the cultural branches of the government whose sole purpose is to preserve the tradition and cultural heritage of the vast array of indigenous communities that exist in Mexico. So by supporting this particular shop you are helping to preserve the welfare of these artisans and their trade. They are open every day from 9 am to 9 pm.

Okay, now I have to visit this place the next time I’m in Akumal. Your pictures are great, Sherry. I love the close-up of the skulls. Just beautiful!

Akumal is 37 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen. When you enter into Akumal from the highway, as you get closer to the beach, you will go through an archway. You can park before the archway or after but it is just past the archway on the right side and easy to see with all its color! Akumal is a small town so it is simple to find.

noticed that there was new colour at the entrance and will visit the store tomorrow to see the “stuff.” The locals did not mention it so we are glad that you mentioned the opening.check for a Canadian snowbird’s report by Friday

YOu are a good photographer Sherry.Stopped by the gallery/shop today. That basket of skulls is surprisingly small and was right at the door. There are lots of skeleton folk-art pieces, some jewellry, little towels and aprons with hand done embroidery. knick-knacks, art which is interesting but some a bit grim. Some of the paintings have been there for more than a year. There is something for everyone but it is pricey.
If you are there it is something to do if snorkelling or diving are not your choice.
