Taco or TACO

March 3rd, 2011

It is difficult to imagine that just a few short blocks separate these two Mexicos, old and new, rich and poor. Take the ubiquitous taco for example….

Just up the street across a busy intersection can be found our local neighbourhood taco stand. This one is renowned for its tasty pork tacos served amid the bustle of traffic, served on tortillas and with sauces in plastic tubs. All served until the huge pan of meat is sold out, gone almost everyday just after noon. The line up of taxi drivers, passers by, hungry cops and the occasional gringo see to that. For a few pesos you can eat well, mingle with the local folks and, with lips tingling, taste one of the faces of the real Mexico.

Just down the street across a lovely tree lined avenue and perched above a new sleek limestone and polished steel building, you will find the face of the new sophisticated Mexico, an authentic taste of a changing cuisine. Instead of the exhaust fumes and traffic you will be lulled by the sea breeze, the gracious service and beautifully presented food. Ah, pork TACOS, cochinita cleverly prepared in the sous vide style in a sealed mason jar. The condiments are perfectly spiced, beautifully presented in lovely little white ceramic dishes and complete with warm corn tortillas freshly made. Many more pesos to be sure but an altogether excellent and interesting dining experience.

No matter which you choose you will be offered a unique perspective on a world beyond the taco, each offering a vastly different but equally delicious opportunity.

Thanks for the reviews! I was wondering what the new place above Baremar was like.
