The Riviera Maya is keeping an eye on Hurricane Dean
August 17th, 2007
Since I live in Playa del Carmen, I will make this short and sweet. We are all watching the path of Hurricane Dean today, August 17, 2007. We like the following site for information: http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200704.html
Along The Riviera Maya coast, we are preparing with boarding up windows, gathering water and non perishable foods, candles etc. It is routine for us living in this area and it is not difficult to prepare. It is always possible to change course but at this moment it appears that it could reach land on the Yucatan Peninsula Monday sometime. If you are traveling to this area in the next few weeks or so, please check the above website and watch the storm. Our community seems to get things back in order pretty rapidly even if we get hit by a hurricane so don’t assume your vacation plans are ruined. I will be posting what it looks like on our end as soon as possible. - Sherry

Be careful Sher! We’ll be thinking of you and Kiko. I’m sure everything will be fine. Although you might be traumatized by being holed up with a bunch of crazy kitties.
Love ya,
Dan, Dawn & Eliza

Has anyone had contact with anyone there? I am so upset that this has happened. Please post if anyone has heard how bad it actually is. Local and network weather only seems to be happy that Cancun was not a direct hit, but those of us who love Costa Maya need to know how bad it is. We were planning on moving there…

I saw a posting from a homeowner 6 km south of Mahahual who rode out the storm just fine with only minor damage to his roof and solar panels. Of course, this was on the south side of the storm where the surge is lowest. I’m afraid that Mahahual and points north on Costa Maya probably didn’t fare nearly as well.

I heard from Sherry’s neighbor that they are all good. That they lost power from 2am until noon but that Sherry and the cats are fine. Very limited damage in the entire area except for Mahahual area. In Playa they are simply cleaning up dowed limbs and trash. In Mahahaul…can’t really say…..
